Genetics in Dementia Diagnosis: Current and Future Perspectives

Presented by Dr. Mario Masellis, this webinar will explain the role of genetics in different types of dementia, including Alzheimer’s dementia (AD) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD).

Specifically, Dr. Masellis will discuss the complex nature of the genetics of AD and FTD, as it relates to late onset sporadic forms vs. early onset familial cases.

Dr. Masellis will also describe two studies:

1. Dominantly Inherited Alzheimer Network-Trials Unit (DIAN-TU): An Opportunity to Prevent Dementia. A study of potential disease modifying treatments in individuals at risk for or with autosomal dominant Alzheimer’s disease, and

2. Genetic Frontotemporal Dementia Initiative (GENFI). This study follows the natural history of individuals at risk for or with genetic frontotemporal dementia, in order to better inform clinical trial design of novel therapeutics. You will have the opportunity to ask questions.

About the presenter:

Dr. Mario Masellis obtained his MSc in Pharmacology (1997), his MD (2001) and is a board certified Neurologist (2006), all at the University of Toronto. He completed a clinical fellowship in Cognitive & Movement Disorders in 2008 and obtained a PhD in Clinical Neurosciences in 2012. He is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto and clinician-scientist at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. His research focuses on understanding shared genetic risk for neurodegenerative diseases of aging using genomic, cognitive and neuroimaging data. He is the Canadian PI of the GENFI project examining presymptomatic biomarkers of genetic frontotemporal dementia. He is a site PI for DIAN-TU.
